Through Learning and Exploring

Book Groups

The First Parish of Bolton Book Club gathers monthly for discussion and sharing, led by Rev Bea Manning, PhD.  An annual calendar of books is selected in September, based in part on group members’ suggestions coupled with Rev Bea’s choice of at least one banned book, one from a different faith tradition than our own to be read during the Lenten season, and the Unitarian Universalist common read for that year.  Discussion is lively and compelling and the books cover a wide range of topics including local history, racism, gender identity, historical issues and current trends and more.

In recent years, the group has partnered with Habitat for Humanity and held a community-wide presentation by an author or local expert on the topics in one of the books. The group has also visited sites of importance identified in our reading experiences, such as the mills of Lowell and a boarding house where young girls lived while working in the mills and the first totally solar powered bookstore in New England.

On-Going Small Group Ministry

Small group ministry, first introduced through the Unitarian Universalist tradition, is a gathering of intentional, small groups that deepen and expand the ministry of a congregation. Two key focuses are intimacy, or building community and deepening relationships, and ultimacy, or the opportunity for deeper spiritual exploration and search for meaning. Small group ministry is also called covenant group ministry, because the members in a group make an intentional commitment to one another.

At the First Parish of Bolton, our Small Group Ministry is led by our Associate Minister, Rev Bea Manning, PhD and averages 5 members in 2 different sessions held once monthly.  Our goal is is to sharpen our understanding of timely issues, theology, and personal challenges as well as deepening our connections to one another through discussion and turning our understanding into actions.

Each meeting uses a reading to highlight a specific topic like belonging, generosity, acceptance, adventure. Each discussion is guided by a series of questions on which members are invited to share their reflections, feelings and thoughts. There is no cross talk or offering of advice. Confidentiality is observed.

Our groups also perform service projects for the church and wider community, reflecting awareness developed from the topics discussed. Recent projects have included supplying diapers for a refugee family, setting up a book exchange, and writing notes to individuals for whom leaving home has become difficult.
